Intern-Guide 2008 - A position for those who have no previous guiding experinence
Guides who lack experience often make very costly mistakes in judgment which result in very poor or disastrous decisions. Therefore experience is often a guide’s best asset when hard decisions need to be made.
A Guide Internship is an educational position that is suitable for individuals that have no prior guiding experience or who are attending an educational program that requires a period of practical experience to complete their studies.
An Intern-Guide will gain valuable experience by working along side some of the highest qualified guides in Norway. He/She will be taught guiding skills and practices in the field and gain first hand knowledge of the demands that are required to lead groups of paddlers. Working as an intern-Guide is an introduction to the rigors of a career in the outdoors and a great way for an individual to start working towards being a full Guide.
The following is a brief outline of the duties that a Coastal Odyssey Intern-guide will be expected to perform.
Day Trips
Interns shall assist in guiding sea kayak day trips and cruise passenger excursions on Geiranger fjord.
Sea Kayak Instructional Excursions
Interns shall assist our instructors in teaching sea kayak skills on instructional excursions. This involves teaching the basics in paddling techniques.
Kayak Rental
Coastal Odyssey rents sea kayaks in Geiranger, we provide a short introduction to sea kayak and safety information as part of the rental agreement. Interns will ensure that this introduction and safety information is properly conveyed to our rental clients before they depart from the dock.
Equipment Control
Interns shall assist with equipment care and maintenance;
Multi-Day Trips
Some of the most important duties on a multi-day trip are listed below;
▪ Assist in the co-ordination of meal preparation
▪ Assist in the co-ordination of kitchen preparation/clean-up
▪ Assisting in co-ordinating trip logistics; for example transportation, food, accommodation, cultural visits, etc…
▪ Learn to be responsible for safety and risk management on the trip
▪ Assist in trip preparation; including organising and packing equipment, shopping for and packing of groceries
▪ Assist in trip clean-up; including care and maintenance of all equipment including the support van and trailers
▪ Assist with detailing special client needs and incorporating then in the day to day trip plan
The terms of an Internship reflect the value of the educational opportunity provided as well as the responsibility placed on our Lead Guides for sharing their knowledge and experience.
